NAI MANGGALE

The folklore of Nai Manggale came from the Tapanuli tribe, which lives in the province of North Sumatra. Generally people in North Sumatra are referred as Batakese. This folklore is not famous (and I guess many average Indonesians don’t know it. So was I.), but the story has a similar part to the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea in the ancient Greece.

QUEEN AJI BIDARA PUTIH

Muara Kaman county lies along the Mahakam River, in eastern Borneo. In the past the county was a kingdom, ruled by Queen Aji Bidara Putih. She was a typical queen of myths: beautiful, wise, and sensitive. Many princes and kings proposed her but she always refused them because she concerned more about ruling her country and guarding her people.

WANEBAKA, SON OF TUNDE

In Bali, there was a man called Tunde. He had been married for 10 years but had no child. So he was happy when his wife got pregnant. But after a few months, his wife’s belly returned to its normal size. It happened many times and he asked a shaman for a help but the shaman could not do anything about it.

JAYABAYA

Jayabaya was born in 1135 in the kingdom of Kediri, East Java. He was famous as a prophet-king. During his reign, he ordered Sedah and Panuluh, Mpu (teachers) and writers as well in the kingdom, to write his stories. He lived only for 24 years but left us ‘Jangka Jayabaya,’ a book of Jayabaya’s propechy.

When my grandmother was alive, and I’m still in childhood, but now the grandmother was dead. Every night before going to bed, my grandmother always tells a story, be it history or fairy tales about animals.
